Vessel-Objects

The idea of the vessel in a literal and figurative sense as a metaphor of human existance is a main concern in my work. Thereby I deal with its most different appearances. Within the idea of the vessel-container I am particularly interested in questions of the inner and outer space, the passage between the two and the illusional aspect of human perception. What is projected onto a surface often results in some sort of back-projection, opening a further imaginative space beyond the aesthetically perceived surface. The visible and invisible, the smooth and the rough, the giving and containing, the revealing and concealing play further important roles in my work. However, the vessel-objects receive their meaning eventually only through an active perceiver. All images can be enlarged.

Installations

In 2010: Realization of a comprehensive installation in collaboration with the author Carlo Sauter dealing with Vessel-Spaces . It took place in the Gallery DAS DING in Lucerne, Switzerland. Thereby gallery, vessel and text spaces lead to an expanded dialogue beyond the real existing. Biennale SWISS CERAMICS "Vers un ailleurs" Basel '09 - The wall installation VERS UN EYE-EURS was developed for the biennale with the "same" title. The installation Vessel-Spaces in the Powerhouse Gallery, Launceston, AUS was developed during my stay in Tasmania in 2004-2005. I intensely explored questions such as the inside and outside space, passage between the two, the organic and construed, impressions and projections and the role of the perceiver. My own experience living far away from my usual centre of life in an unfamiliar cultural, social and geographical environment influenced my work. (For further information on the installation see also, 'Bettina Baumann's Vessel Spaces', by the art historian Deborah Malor, under bibliography)

Projects / Workshops

In addition to my own studiowork and teaching commitments I realise a number of projects. I work with teenagers, students or adults in the context of art, ceramics or questions of creative learning- and developing processes. Occasionally, I further take on commissions for other artists.
